Perception of value among older adult consumers for the design of marketing strategies for horticultural products in the city of Puebla
Main Article Content
Abstract
demographic shift resulting from the growth of the elderly population creates challenges and opens up significant opportunities for the local retail sector. The objective of this study was to analyze the factors that determine the perceived value of horticultural products among consumers over the age of 60 in the city of Puebla, in order to propose differentiated marketing strategies for MSMEs in the sector. A quantitative, cross-sectional, and correlational methodological approach was used, which included administering a structured questionnaire to 68 older adults selected through non-probability sampling. The results reveal that Socio-Cultural and Trust Value (M=4.23) is the most important dimension, surpassing purely economic or functional factors. Consumers in this segment prioritize trust in the seller, support for local producers, and a connection to culinary traditions, preferring local channels such as neighborhood produce stands and local markets. It is concluded that the most effective business strategies for horticultural MSMEs should focus on building a system of trust and enhancing the in-store shopping experience, rather than competing solely on price. This study provides a value model that has been empirically validated in a local context and offers practical guidelines for MSMEs to strengthen their competitiveness and meet the needs of this growing demographic segment.
