Abstract

The purpose of this documentary research was to reflect on the importance of establishing a school counseling office in each secondary school, dedicated to providing comprehensive and dignified guidance to students. This counseling service should consider students’ intellectual capacities, sports, cultural, artistic, and academic skills, as well as their current social situation and future educational and professional options. It is essential that students feel accompanied and receive personalized guidance to address their specific issues through an individualized education plan that incorporates the participation of the teaching staff, administrative staff, representatives of support institutions, and the family or guardians. The methodology employed consisted of a documentary analysis and the use of conceptual mapping to guide the development of the work. The results obtained allowed for the identification of the notion of educational counseling, highlighting its role as a space that facilitates the development of students in making informed decisions, with a positive impact on their well-being and academic success. The conclusion from the documentary analysis is that comprehensively implemented school counseling programs in secondary schools significantly improve academic performance; contribute to the reduction of dropout rates; and are essential for the socio-emotional development of students.
